ALMOST TRUE TALES is an exquisite picture book. The volume offers selection of works by American artist Brian Keith Stephens, made in 2020-2022, placing it in a context of his observations, muses and surroundings. More than just presenting a collection of paintings, the book in a form of original combinations of visual elements brings forward the process of creating the body of work, what in this case culminated in the exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in Connecticut. Besides paintings the concept of Almost True Tales is reflected through the mixture of drawings, collages and photography created in collaboration with the artists wife, photographer Pola Esther. Stephens and Esther have been working together on many projects under the name “Faloblu” since 2010. This amalgamate of sketches and behind-the-scenes images offers a unique peek into the artist’s practice.
Within 176 pages of this vehement, vibrant and dynamic publication you will also find essays by art historian Natasha Kurchanova and writer Michael Lindgren providing further insights into Stephens' artistic approaches and critical perspective on his works, alongside Aesop fables which were an important inspiration for the concept.
